When we talk about taking care of ourselves, or self care, we often think about relaxing in a bubble bath with a mask on and watching our favorite show. When this is a perfectly valid way of taking care of yourself, it is only a small part of what this is about. Self care simply means allowing time for yourself, and this can be physical, mental, emotional, or even spiritual. It all comes down to what you need and how to go about it. You may think that you do not have time for self care because you need to care for others. However, remember that you cannot pour from an empty cup and taking care of others without taking care of yourself will eventually result in burning out.

Taking care of your body is important and goes a long way. Choosing your health is a big part of taking care of yourself, making sure that you stay healthy while also attaining the goals that you set for yourself. However, the body also needs rest, and it is important to recognize that self care involves getting enough sleep and enough rest. Going to bed at a decent time and getting 7-8 hours of sleep per night is necessary for you to feel your best!

Taking care of yourself mentally is important too. Sometimes you need to reset and take a few moments to breathe and clear your mind during a busy day, or you need a short meditation session to help you feel a bit lighter. Other times you need to connect with people around you, and spending time with family and friends is a great way to take care of your soul.

Taking care of your body might mean working out, but it might also mean stretching after a long day sitting at a desk or getting some movement after a lazy day. Caring for yourself does not necessarily mean it is always pleasant and feels good. You could have been relaxing all day and enjoying watching tv; which is pleasant and a good way to unwind; but what you might need is to take a walk outside to get some fresh air and move your body. The thought of doing this might seem like a chore at that moment, but you will thank yourself for doing it once you are there and moving!

Remember, self care means that you are allowing yourself to do something that you need and that is important to you. Whether it is physically or mentally, there are so many things you can do to take care of yourself and coming to the studio is one of them! So next time you get through the door, remind yourself that the workout you are about to do is also one of your ways to take care of yourself.
